One of my favorite parts of being a photographer, especially here in beautiful South Georgia, is discovering the hidden gems that make each photo session unique. On July 6, I set out on a location scouting trip through my area, and I wanted to share a behind-the-scenes look at what I found.
My first stop was about 25 minutes from home. With music playing and the windows down, I paid close attention to the side roads, dirt paths, and open fields along the way. I always keep an eye out for scenic spots I can pin for future sessions. This part of Georgia is filled with natural beauty that makes for stunning photo backdrops.
The first location I visited was tucked behind an overgrown stone fence. It looked absolutely dreamy, but there was a "No Trespassing" sign posted, so I made a note to do more research on how to access the area properly. Just a little farther down the road, I came across a magical scene. The trees on either side of the dirt road curved together to create a natural tunnel. I had to stop and take a few photos. It felt peaceful, almost cinematic, and I saved it as a potential location for future shoots
Next, I visited a regional park in the area. I had heard it might offer some good spots for photos, but it turned out to be mostly baseball fields and a waterpark. There were a few small grassy areas that could work with the right creative approach, but it's not a top contender for now.
I had also heard about a sunflower field nearby. There wasn’t a direct address listed, just the name of a road. I typed it into my GPS and ended up entering the street from the middle, which took me the wrong way at first. After turning around and exploring a bit more, I finally found the field. It was everything I hoped for. The sunflowers stretched across the horizon, full and golden. I took several photos and saved the location. This is definitely a place I want to bring clients to as my schedule fills up.
To finish the day, I drove through downtown Statesboro. Our downtown is sweet, welcoming, and full of character. I took time to notice the different streets and buildings that could make great backdrops. I'm excited to use some new angles for sessions in that area soon.
When I got home, I edited the photos I took of the tree tunnel and the sunflower field and updated my website gallery with the new images. There’s something so rewarding about seeing a new location come to life on camera.
Overall, the scouting trip was a success. I found beautiful spots, learned more about my area, and added several new options for future clients. I’m still exploring and always searching for new inspiration, but this trip was a big step forward.
